Have you ever listened to a song that really seemed like it was going to be something great? Then you get into it and there are elements that hold it back. You see the vision, but the chasm from the idea to the application is pretty big. Or maybe it’s close, but no cigar.
That’s exactly where I stand with this new Ron Isley, “No More.” This song is awesome on paper, I’m sure, but something went tragically wrong in the physical construction. It reminds me of that friend we all have who tries too hard to get the new fashion trend together, but ends up looking busy and haphazard.
The theme of the song is simple. She’s awesome. She’s the finest thing he’s ever seen and he loves her like he loves his favorite TV show. (Corny? Maybe, but when you’re 69 that’s a serious declaration of affection.) They just don’t make ‘em like her “No More.”
Isley’s voice is just as amazing as it’s always been. There is very little wear and that throaty high is still there. His delivery is laid back, maybe too much and that exposes one of the issues with the production. It’s a bit too clustered for Ron to helm this melody. The construction builds nicely at the beginning, but the great acoustic guitar is over shadowed by a thump that’s too overbearing for the song. The additional clap just adds to the weight of the track.
There is a reprieve in the bridge with the digital strings and layered vocals, but the transition isn’t great. It’s a shame because throughout, Isley sounds incredible and if the track wasn’t so overwrought, this song could have been something really special. I still support. They don’t make voices like Ron’s no more. Enjoy.
