Remember those posse cuts where you just had a tough beat, a few cats that actually knew each other and the desire to up the ante lyrically?  Those days seem to get smaller in the rearview mirror. For just a moment, that time has returned with rapper Montage One with “Bloodlust,” a track he shares with Planet Asia and TriState. The West coast trio rips ill rhymes and recall the good old days.

The beat is a gully yet simple construction with hard drums and a soul sample drizzled on top with a mid level electric guitar. It breaks in all the right places to give emphasis and pressure release. There is no bridge or chorus on this and the rappers pass the mic like a baton with no space between their sixteens. The sample is cut into wails and sped up in other places to round out the beat. It closes with an eerie whispering voice that speaks to the title of the song.

Lyrically they each bring a different aesthetic to the table. Montage goes for the gusto immediately roaring “Coming out of nowhere like the death of MJ, sickle-shaped slash you with the puns and word play” immediately setting the tone of the record. His rhyme scheme is two-line rhymed but his flow is adequate. Planet Asia’s voice is huskier, with an intricate internal rhyme scheme and alliterative device employed and talk of Masons, the matrix, Jesus and other otherworldly mentions. The closeout verse has a dual rhyme scheme in different places and is delivered with aggression.

“Bloodlust” doesn’t change the world but it is gritty, hard-core Hip-Hop, West Coast style. It’s good listening, short and hard hitting. Do yourself a favor and get hip. Enjoy.
