Planet Ill Breakdown: Marsha Ambrosius-Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)

By Odeisel

Breaking up is hard to do, and that degree of difficulty only increases with age because we have more on the line when we let people into our hearts. It’s not puppy love anymore, we’re getting older in age, and the prospect of people running around knowing that much about you is disconcerting. You go from still pining for them to missing them to wishing bad things on them, once you admit to yourself that you can’t bring back that loving feeling. Marsha Ambrosius knows this and with her new song, “Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player)” she lets us know exactly how much.

Beyond the funny title, Ambrosius speaks directly to the emotions of the aftereffect of a bitter breakup. She remembers how good the sex was and hopes he does too, but looks at the shattered pieces of the relationship and realizes that the sex wasn’t enough to keep him. Obviously she’s feeling the short end of the stick because he’s moved on first. As we all do, we can’t imagine that we may be the reason things fell apart and we focus on their part and demean the person that’s next on the hit parade. But it’s the very conspicuous “Now that I’m without you” and her still calling him “baby” that speak to that absence and her loss, even as she hopes his next girl spends his money on wild things, doesn’t give up the coochie, and is sucking the next guys d**k. At least she admits she’s bitter.

Musically, the song the song starts tech aided and she’s sounds a bit T-Painish, but that effect diminishes and by the time we get to her vocal runs, the computer is off and we get her real voice with all its emotion an d heart in full bloom. There is a small bit of distortion on the bottom but it’s not overpowering. She breaks into a couple short bar rhymes over a minimalist break beat a couple times during the storm. You can see the club floor full of hating ass exes with drinks in the sky singing along, shitting on new bitches everywhere. The beat thumps, the theme connects and Marsha delivers. Raise your glasses and ptui at his/her new boo. Enjoy. You was too good for him anyway puuuddin.’
