Overall, I think this editorial is spot on. However, I must beg to differ regarding the Gary Coleman character in Avenue Q. I’ve seen the musical (and listened to the score more times than I can count), and I think their portrayal of him was anything but mean-spirited. Yes, he was a burned out, washed up has-been, but everyone in that play was–and his character was very sympathetic and well-adjusted (arguably, more so than Mr. Coleman ever got to be in real life). And his character may have been played by a woman (for the voice), but I’ve never seen the Gary character as anything but a red-blooded, full-grown man.
