Manic Monday 2/8/2010: Clashes, Reviews, Interviews and The Super Bowl

By Odeisel

Now that everyone is off their Super Bowl sugar rush, we can return to giving the week that was on Planet Ill. First off, three legends celebrated their birthdays this weekend, the Legendary Bob Marley, Big Pun, and the late, great, J Dilla. How you hold each in esteem is your prerogative, but they have changed people’s lives with music to differing degrees and that is to be commended.

We ramped up the pace this week on The Planet. We had Grammy coverage from out in LA and right in front of the tube as the staff took turns interviewing artists and producers and speculating who would win. To break the monotony, Rowdy took a look at Kurt Warner’s retirement on Out of Bounds.

We had a couple Hip-Hop reviews as B.O.B. along with DJ Drama and DJ Sense dropped the stunning May 25th Mixtape. DJ Green Lantern and Styles P dropped the Green Ghost Project . International singer Nneka dropped the compelling Concrete Jungle as well.

Malice Intended delivered a rare Movie Classic Clash, pitting the 5 Deadly Venoms against the 5 Element Ninjas. Another round of reviews came with Jaheim’s Another Round by Fawn Renee and Statik Selektah’s 100 Proof The Hangover. A negro With A Keyboard took a look at Diddy and Black opulence in his weekly You Wild

We interviewed rising producer Marco Polo on having the courage to be a producer. Shelz’s weekly freestyle column “And The Beat Goes On…” fought valiantly to find verses that weren’t over the same popular beats. The weekly Fusebox Radio podcast focused on net neutrality and new music from Erykah Badu.

We took it to the screen as Malice Intended reviewed Mel Gibson’s The Edge of Darkness and a DVD review of Dante’s Interno: An Animated Epic. Foxy Brown dropped some heat on the streets with Let Em Know, and our tech expert Elianne Halbersberg took a look at whether buying an iPad made any sense.

Oddisee and George Levin powered this week’s Indiesent Exposure while Gil Scott-Heron reintroduced himself to our consciousness with I’m New Here. Super Bowl Sunday was carried by the Rowdy One with a bit of shelz on top, as our 10 Super Bowl Commandments and live chat sandwiched a Prince powered Classic Clash. The week in less than 400 words.  And now, onto the music.
