Planet Ill Breakdown: Foxy Brown- Let ‘Em Know
Foxy brown hovered below the radar since her release from prison two years ago. She’s done some shows for which she has garnered some pretty bad responses. She released Don Diva to tepid reviews and even cooler sales. There have been snippets of new songs released here and there, but nothing that has caught any substantial attention. Last night though, she dropped a single with BAM and Lil Fame behind the mics and Easy Mo Bee behind the boards that has managed to create some buzz, at least around on the internet.
I’m not quite sure if “Let ‘Em Know” is supposed to be the first step on her road to Hip-Hop redemption or just a lil something the team whipped up during a break from the real material. The track sounds a bit dated, not bad, just throw back. Lil Fame is on point as he normally is and BAM isn’t bad. However, Foxy seems stuck in the past. Her name dropping is from last millennium and she’s following that tried and true Hip-Hop strategy of keeping other folks names in her mouth in the hopes that they reciprocate.
I guess the biggest non-shocking shock lyrics would have to be Foxy saying back in the day she let Jigga Man dip in the Ill Na Na.
“Said I f*cked with Nas, and now they say it’s AZ. But on the low, the real n*gga was Jay-Z”
This line of course is followed by a loud “Shhhhhh” which confuses me a bit because I thought this was common knowledge. Then again I’m older than most in this industry so to many of these hoppas this might be news. But just a suggestion, don’t spread it like it’s a revelation because actually it’s not.
Then of course the Queen of The Firm moves on to Lil Kim and suggests she somehow disrespected her hood by being on “Dancing With the Stars.” Now this could possibly be true because I know a grip of folks who think anything outside of sitting on the stoop, drinking Steel Reserve and being generally miserable right along with their miserable ass is hood disrespect. However, in this case it just sounds like sour grapes.
Foxy said some other stuff too about going to Baltimore (back in the day), doing something in Jay’s Lexus (back in the day) and taking it back to ’96 when B.I.G. was still alive (back in the day). She mentions Eve and Trina and umm…blah blah blah.
Funny thing though, even with these less than stellar lyrics and obvious desire to find a stitch in time, she still sounds better than Nicki Minaj. Go figure.
Anyway, the decision is ultimately up to the consumer which is you. So, be honest, would you consume this? Listen then speak on it.
