We’ve heard a good portion of Lasers at this point and there is a smorgasbord of sound presented. Lupe seems to be trying to knock it out the Hip-Hop park on some of these tracks, but we know sluggers strike out a lot. The themes are generally positive and the hooks are constructed for maximum pop effect. It’s a little more mainstream leaning than what I expected, but so far okay. Except for this one dance song. Grrrrrrrr.
“I Don’t Wanna Care Right Now” features MDMA and is a very club-friendly song with some handy dandy auto tune on the hook. There’s a simple, bouncy bassline, some digital maracas and electronic string stabs. I see a strobe and a big bar and bubble drops at midnight. His flow is spread across the track like butter, one long word with a drawn out vowel at the end. Well, that’s when he’s not Max Headroom-ing it up with the doubled up words. I’m not sure why he doesn’t care, but I wish he would.
The lyrics are pretty simple. There are obviously some folks who told him he had to walk a certain path and he’s blowing them and their path off. There’s a bunch of I’m hot and you’re not comparisons. I think this is a sneak attack on the haters, without actually calling them haters… since saying you have them is so passé. He then returns to his the-world-is-your-oyster theme, spewing some affirmations for the fans. Lupe could do self-help books, but he should stay away from dance songs that are this literal.
Lupe doesn’t care, so why should I complain. It will just fall on deaf ears. Get your wobble game up. Lupe says there’s no parking on the dance floor. If you don’t move he’ll be forced to give you a ticket. So get with it.
