It’s Steve Job’s world and we’re all just living in it. iMacs gave way to iPods and Nanos and iPads and everyone is a customer. Donny Goines is trying to make you a customer and his latest single “iDat” does its best to prove that Goines is indeed “Dat” dude. The track, produced by Grand Staff may make you pull out that cheddar and get on line.
Donny has been working on flow and switching rhyme patterns and transitions, clearly evident on his last release 20X. That hard work is present on iDat almost immediately with his intro which begins in normal form then moves to a double time scheme and back seamlessly, something he wasn’t able to do on The Breakfast Club. There is a hefty amount of swagger and bravado here as Donny can tell he’s gotten better and he’s throwing it in other rapper’s faces.
The beat is infectious with a confined thump derived from many moving parts. There is a digital flutish sound that rolls with the snare and a boom bap drum that keeps the pace. “iDat n***a” repeats on the break which can get a bit monotonous but it fits in the course of the rhythm
In the end, there is a dope beat and strong rhymes over them. While nothing is eye poppingly increadible, the song sticks to its narrative, showcases Goine’s skills as a rapper and it bumps. Is he “dat” dude? You be the judge. iDat. Enjoy.
