Planet Ill Breakdown: Lil Wayne Feat. Drake-Gonorrhea

Lil Wayne is many things but one thing he is not, is lazy. While his physical presence has sorely been missed, his pre prison studio work was enough to keep the streets satisfied since he’s been locked up. While Minaj is gaining momentum and Drake is treading water in the wake of an underwhelming album, Weezy F’s place is still secured. His latest duet with Drizzy, “Gonorrhea” feels a bit like “A Milli” lite, but does more than enough to keep his name hot.

The beat has that same amorphous repetitive knock to it. Wayne’s non bar constrained structure is serviced by the muffled 808’s and aided by the low electric guitars on the breaks. Digital noise runs throughout and camouflages a couple of weak lines in the song.

Lyrically, Wayne is all over the place with hoops allegory and connections that are ill at times and weak at others. He forces lines to fit with his accent as is the case with the following: Ball (bald) like Solange India Irie, Britney Spears. He also uses the soon to be overdone Drake punchline set up style. Most of the punch lines are cute or eyebrow-raising but nowhere near his best stuff.

Drake has more confidence when he rhymes with Wayne and it’s evident on this track. His flow is run on but it’s dope. He’s with your baby mama while you home with the baby. He’s oh so happy Weezy is coming home. He got the bread and the cheese call him a calzone. Cute. His delivery is the high mark of his performance and it’s good to hear him not whining on a track.

In case you were wondering about the song title, you’re a pussy ass. A diseased pussy ass. And Weezy and Drake want no parts of that. As they shouldn’t. Gonorrhea. Enjoy. (That’s what she said).
