Grammy Slam: Who The Ill Thinks Should Win

By shelz.

It’s Grammy time again peeps.  Now, I know Hip-Hop takes the frowny-faced B-Boy stance when it comes to these presentations, suggesting that the awards mean nothing.  Until, of course, a rapper wins one.  Then they drag 20 of their closest friends and a couple of chicks they just met in the lobby on stage with them.

So drop the front, admit you are a little excited about the telecast and read on because Planet Ill is playing awards night psychics and telling you who is going to win before it happens.  Word? Yup.

First up is Best Rap Solo Performance

Drake – “Over”

Drake – Over

Eminem – “Not Afraid”

Eminem-Im Not Afraid (Dirty)

T.I. – “I’m Back”

t.i.-im-back

Kanye West feat. Dwele – “Power”

03 Power (Ft. Dwele)

Ludacris – “How Low”

02. Ludacris – How Low

Picking a winner for this award appears pretty easy.  The fact that Ludacris pulled in as many nominations as he did considering the quality of Battle of The Sexes says to me that they were nominating rappers and not music. No offense to Luda, he’s a talented guy but that album is far from award material.  T.I. is just too much of a numbskull to be given anything but more jail time. Over really isn’t as great as most of y’all thought it was.  That leaves Kanye and Em.  I think Kanye is still too much of a loose cannon to allow him entree to the stage and “Not Afraid” has this whole touching story of beating adversity behind it.

Winner: Eminem – “Not Afraid”

Best New Artist

Drake

Drake – Im Ready For You

Mumford & Sons

03 Winter Winds

Justin Beiber

Justin Bieber – Baby ft. Ludacris

Florence and the Machine

05 Kiss With a Fist

Esperanza Spalding

05. Wild Is The Wind

Esperanza Spalding has been around for years, so I’m not quite sure how she managed to sneak into this category, but her winning this award would restore my faith in mankind.  That’s why I know it’s not going to happen. Drake might start crying and create a backlash that could effectively ruin his career since y’all are so anti man emotion these days.  So I will hope for his sake he doesn’t win. Mumford & Sons and Florence and The Machine released  great albums this year, but I can’t imagine anyone winning this except Justin Bieber. His fans would rip the venue down, brick by brick, if someone else walked off with that statue. Sorry everyone else, but this one is all about public safety.

Winner: Justin Bieber

Best R&B Vocal Performance Female

Faith Evans – “Gone Already”

Faith Evans-Gone Already

Monica – “Everything To Me”

Monica – Everything to Me

Fantasia – “Bittersweet”

Kelly Price – “Tired”

Kelly Price – Tired

Jazmine Sullivan – “Holding You Down”

Love is rough ladies and these five songs are all reminders that you have to put in massive work when involved with a man. I want to give this to Monica because it’s the lightest of the selections and we need some positive reinforcement in our lives. Fantasia belted out “Bittersweet,” but her delivery is scratchy like unfinished wool and everyone doesn’t like that. Faith’s album was really good, but she’s old news as is Kelly Price. Jazmine Sullivan is a strong vocalist who released a great album this year and “Holding You Down” was one of the high points.

Winner: Jazmine Sullivan – “Holding You Down”

That’s all for now folks. Tomorrow we will be back with Producer of the Year, Best Rap Collaboration and Best Pop Vocal Album.  Au Revior.
