Reunited and it feels so hood. That’s what we all thought after the Dipset, a few of whom are blood related (no pun intended), decided to get back together. They were okay separate, with all the disparate movements carried on by its members, but like cartoons, if you ain’t Voltron, you’re just a bunch of lions. When they came back and underwhelmed with “Salute” (until newbie Vado added a passionate verse on the remix), we took it as rust and gave them the mulligan. Well it didn’t take long for them to make some controversial waves as Killa and Jim Jones have dropped a diss track to Kanye entitled “Toast” over a Kanye-produced track. Word to Beans.
We know the story. The Roc breaks up, and Kanye, even though Dame Dash was the one that supported him and believed in him, took the easy way out and sided with Jay-Z. Yes it was foul. Very sucker move-ish. But…it was also almost seven years ago. Kanye knows he was “wrong” but as Lebron James showed, wherever you take your talents is where you are.
The beat itself is a bit light for a diss track. It doesn’t lend itself well to malice or tough talk and Jim actually sounds a bit silly tough talking over the beat. And we’re not even going to get on the awful hook singing. Very unwavy.
Cam’s rhymes are actually cool and non-nursery, but his rationale behind even making the song is a bit bogus. Dame is a grown man and Kanye hooked Cam up with a few bangers in his run including “Down and Out” which he recorded after it was clear Jay-Z wasn’t Cam’s biggest supporter. Kanye has always shouted Cam out as a dope MC even when it was hard to call him that for a few years when everyone turned their backs on him.
And Kanye, you a sucka nigga/Dissed Dame, so my attitude is fuck a nigga
Suckin’ Jigga, how you gon’ live with that?/Took the beat, now… come get it back
“Toast” is tough talk directed at someone who isn’t trying to be tough back. It’s like a high school bully waiting outside the gifted class looking for milk money. As much as people miss the Dipset, no one is going to take this song seriously or look for a Yeezy retort. Jay-Z and Kanye just rocked Yankee Stadium. You’re going to have to do more to ruffle those feathers.
