Amerikkka’s Nightmare Part 2: Children of War-Episode 3

By Odeisel

In the latest installment of Amerikkka’s Nightmare Part 2: Children of War, we have the point where the album begins to go deeper in theme and more melancholy in mood. The track “I Had A Vision” picks up where “Tomorrow’s Children” left off with a somber violin drawing out the emotion while James Baldwin and H. Rap Brown discuss the issues of race and the position of Black people in America and how their presence takes an uneasy place in society. The avoidance of the race question exacerbates existing tensions and doesn’t allow for proper resolution of our differences. “Tomorrow’s Children” addressed the role of the present in taking on the burdens of the past.  What place do rappers have in carrying on our oral traditions? What responsibility do they have? Those questions are addressed in the body of this song and in the accompanying interview.

“Child of War” is the first song on the album that abandons the practice of speech/clip inserts and lets the music speak. The guitar driven energy immediately changes the feel of the album and the song in particular changes the mission from impassioned rational discourse to emotional release.  Rage isn’t the operative emotion but there is uneasiness and anger present in this song.  The song itself deals with soldiers and their situation in the midst of chaos trying to find reason, both to continue surviving and to attach rationale to why they are in jeopardy in the first place.
