Hey there to all of our Planet Ill Folks!
We’re back to give y’all some Indiesent Exposure – the weekly writeup and music download piece here on Planet Ill that strives to give some deserved exposure to quality artists doing their thing independent music circuit.
Pretty much every music genre is covered in this section – Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc. – to keep things a bit lively & diverse.
Hopefully, we’ll give your ears a temporary break from some of the audio wackness and/or iCoonery that bombards folks each day via the radio and TV airwaves.
If you like what you hear (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to shows, etc.
End of the day, they need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
This past week, I’m going to highlight some of the MCs who are still actually keeping me to like Hip-Hop music from the indie circles (trust, sometimes it gets HARD).
Check out everything below from these talented artists and let us over here Planet Ill know what you think when you get the chance:
Tommy Tee feat. Tshawe, CL Smooth & Son of Light – About That Girl (Download)
Norway’s representive Tommy Tee has been involved in Hip-Hop for a very long time over in Europe. He’s a very dope producer who has worked with everyone from Souls of Mischief to Large Professor to MOP to Talib Kweli.
Tommy Tee is also a jack of trades handling the duties of being a well known successful radio host, record company owner (Tee Productions), concert promoter and magazine publisher throughout the continent.
People might have heard various singles he produced on community and college radio over here in the States that were either independently released or through his own album releases since 1998.
This track I’ve chosen for Indiesent Exposure is coming from his new album, Studio-Time, which drops on October 5, 2009 internationally.
“About That Girl” has a nice smooth groove and good drums to it along with the always solid mic skills of classic era MC CL Smooth up on it.
For more info and music from Tommy Tee, go over to his official MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/tommyteemusic.
Blitz The Ambassador – Breathe (Download)
Ghana Born, New York City raised MC Blitz the Ambassador has been putting out really solid singles and appearances for the past few years in the independent Hip-Hop scene (with his recent mixtape, On My Mixtape S*** getting well deserved critical props).
Personally, I feel he does one of the best live Hip-Hop sets I’ve seen in the past few years from a major or indie artist – dope delivery, musicality & energy in one good package.
“Breathe” comes from his latest album, Stereotype, and has a cool live band feel along with a reggae type flow going on (and a cool message as well).
You can get more information on Blitz The Ambassador’s music projects and performances over at http://www.myspace.com/blitztheambassador.
Duece Poppi – My White Friends (Download)
Way back when fans of the Slip-N-Slide Record label (before Trina, Trick Daddy, Rick Ross, etc.) know about Atlanta, GA Hip-Hop MC Duece Poppi.
Besides his solo releases on the label, he has been a long time in house writer and producer for the label (most in mainstream music land know him for writing and spitting the hook to Trick Daddy’s “Shut Up”) for the artists listed above and others.
“My White Friends” is one of the leaked joints from Duece Poppi’s currently untitled solo album and honestly, besides the fact that the beats and flows are cool on the club/drive in the car blasting the stereo loud as hell vibe, the song to me is personally hilarious for a lot of reasons.
Check out the video promo for the song below:

Tone Trump feat. Rosco P. Coldchain & Milli Millionz – Freedom of Speech (Download)
West Philadelphia MC, athlete, businessman and activist Tone Trump is the type of cat I like who does that I guess we now call “Street Hip-Hop/Street Hop” that’s rare these days – a person who actually rhymes about all sides of what goes down with the streets and it lifestyle – the good, bad and ugly.
In other words, we don’t get this recent rash of superthug-ism that’s overwhelming the airwaves to the point it’s annoying (“you dealt 50000 kilos of coke on the street today” * yawn *).
And he’s also REALLY good at it – he possesses a solid straight ahead flow style and knows about choosing some quality production in his work.
The track “Freedom of Speech” is my favorite track from his current album that’s out now, Trump Life, and is a pretty strong track against police brutality and justice system issues that are still occurring in Every Hood, USA that mainstream media still unfortunately doesn’t want to look at or take seriously.
Get more info on the multiple moves that Tone Trump is making at http://www.myspace.com/tonetrump.
theBREAX – Someone Special (Download)
theBREAX are an energetic Hip-Hop Spoken Word band that consists of MC & Producer Ruslan, DJ/MC Beleaf & Drummer/Producer Mic B.
After first forming up in San Diego, CA in 2006, this hybrid crew representing Azerbaijan and Baltimore, MD has opened up for acts like LA Symphony & Supernatural and have received love from the indie label/promotion house Rawkus Records in 2007 as being one of the “next 50 important Hip-Hop acts”.
The track “Someone Special” is from their latest album release that’s out now, Restocked 1.5, which is an album full of pretty cool vibes along with the music – positive, but not to the point of being too preachy, corny or any of those type of scenarios. Just cool and uplifting.
To see more of the dopeness theBREAX are up to, get at them at http://www.myspace.com/thebreax.
Wait a second….I’m not done yet with the musical goodness…
