Tobi, Nigerian R&B crooner by way of Canada, brings you his latest single Sweet Poison. The track is already his second in the new year and Tobi comes with a peppery, smooth delivery that feels like Ne-Yo with an edge
Sweet Poison is a slow, simmering, introspective ballad with dithering atmospherics . It’s de ja vu as Tobi vacillates between a falsetto and a rap-sing construction while discussing the repeat mishaps of love.
We sometimes find ourselves caught in a loop of failed relationships because we keep choosing the same types of person. Of course, that leads to similar results.
Tobi puts it rather succinctly:
We all been head over heels with Mona Lisas who were really Cruella D’evils
The song’s concept is based on Freud’s repetition compulsion theory. A person repeats an event over and over or the circumstances that lead to the event. Not a bad inspiration for R&B in terms of high concept.
Looks like Tobi may need to change his type or step out and try something new. You should too. Have some of this Sweet Poison. A nice entry in the R&B lane.
