Lil Miquela is an imaginary character created by Trevor McFedries and Sara Decou as a digital art project. Since her creation she has set the internet on fire with over a million Instagram followers, many trying to prove or disprove her reality. Baauer met Lil Miquela online and the two dropped the anti-hater collaboration Hate Me.
On the track Miquela (or whomever is speaking for her) confronts those dismiss her existence because of whom or what she is. Obviously if you don’t exist, that could present a fairly good reason, but one could apply that rationale to any racial, gender, sexual preference, nationality objection and arrive at a similar fuck ya’ll point.
As Far as her individual struggle, Lil Miquela talks the struggle of fame and how it attracts idolatry and negativity, comparing the internet to a cruel mean girls kind of high school cafeteria, complete with emotional roller coaster. Bauuer, an internet sensation in his own right, delivers his trademarked high-powered production. Lyric vid accentuates the message as well as make sup for the fact that Lil Miquela ain’t real. It’s Gorillaz taken to the logical conclusion of trans media; imaginary characters that believe they are real, 4th wall be damned.
Hate Me. Enjoy.
