What do you get when you mix Rozay, BK legends Smif-N-Wessun and Earth Wind & Fire? You get Capone Suite from the Future-curated Superfly Soundtrack. Reviews from the movie are mixed, with some touting its stylized contemporary approach while other bemoan yet another Hollywood remake that departs from its classic origins. The music however is another story, with modernity a necessity and the Boss is on cruise control but in full command on this track.
Smif-N-Wessun’s contribution to Capone Suite is the hook and a short intro, but it is always good to hear cats that are popping in the mainstream shout out and include the underground, particularly across regional boundaries. The brevity also minimizes the chance or a style conflict, although Ross rarely ever has that issue with his collaborations. The bars are still there with the razor sharp line “niggas dap you then dagger you with the same hand” that serves as a warning to wannabe hustlers.
Ever present throughout the composition is the heavenly Earth Wind & Fire “aaaaAAAAaaaAAAAAH” from the immortal standard Can’t Hide Love. it’s inclusion brings a cool, measured calm to all the game spitting and hustler talk that frames Ross as a veteran in the game, His delivery is typically smooth but with a staccato structure, particularly in the third stanza where Ross raps:
I seasoned the talent, Tom Brady’d the flow, Robert Kraft with the checks, Belichick with the toast
Clearly Mr. Roberts is honing his craft in the off season leading up to his highly anticipated Port of Miami 2: Born to Kill. Capone Suite is a dope soundtrack song and a worthy lead in to playoff season. Let’s hope the Boss can deliver a championship followup to Rather You Than Me.
