Death Wish conjures images of revenge driven violence and Charles Bronson’s Hogun the Grim piercing, squinting eyes and ratty mustache. In this case, Death Wish is the first of a two-part special project between Cypress Hill legend DJ Muggs and underground hero MF Doom, part of a larger Muggs project Assassination Day. The slow-grinding, eerie track is primarily helmed by Freddie Gibbs.
Dithering strings and haunting keys provide the sinister undercurrent, with a dusty, cavernous drum flesh out the horrific beat. The result is a really trippy track, particularly with MF Doom’s husky, low vocals and plodding delivery. Gibbs brings a gangster energy that allows the song to drift away from film noir and into the hood. His rapid fire rhyme scheme is twice as fast as the beat but remains in sync and maintaining clarity.
In one particular burst, GIbbs goes from serving fiends in a pissy project staircase to trading a car for two bricks of coke from a Mexican off Alameda Ave, letting us know that if you get caught sleeping on the streets you will end up leaking in the news sheets. You get the picture. Death Wish.
Look out for First Chapter next Friday featuring Gibbs and Kool G. Rap
