Kelis is setting the table for a righteous comeback album. The appropriately entitled Food is shaping up to be a return to natural roots and the latest single/video, Jerk Ribs is no exception. The world music/reggae horns and organic instrumentation belie all the current trends of pop music with their natural tenor. The various breaks and the extended bridge make for a throwback record that doesn’t harken to any particular era.
Kelis rides the rhythm with a soft but assertive voice that is both feminine but strong. Kelis always had that flavor; that “it” that you couldn’t quantify that made her stand out and after an album of trying to play catchup, Jerk Ribs is getting her back center. While the rest of R&B is picking up trap music’s sloppy seconds and features dudes begging some girl or some girl crying over a broken heart, Milkshake is making that real shit again. I can dig it. Here are the visuals for Jerk Ribs. Food is coming. Get your ass a plate.
