The next generation of Hip-Hoppers are coming hard and swinging for the fences. There is an awareness of Hip-Hop as a business but the internet and the rise of independent music has allowed for a lot more grit to get some light. Boldy James is dropping malevolent bars full of malice and willful intent. Props to the Paid In FUll reference. It’s not violence and fronting but gruff, tough rhymes that are built for smoked out trucks and late night sessions. With an album produced exclusively by Alchemist dropping next week, Boldy hits us with a collabo featuring Earl Sweatshirt, Da$h and Domo Genesis called Reform School.
Alchemist don’t make music to dance to, but music to make you go for your heater. This is no exception. The beat is slow and measured, allowing each rapper to go in and get it without trying to get fancy on some double times beat or get distracted by weird ass atmospherics. This is cut and dry hard shit and every last one of these cats dropped proper bars.Earl Sweatshirt retains the grit from his standout debut album along with his trademarked slow but sophisticated rhyme schemes. Da$h comes through looking to hit a lick, telling the tale of the setup and stick up, shouting out Training Day‘s Alonzo on the way to a strong performance.
If this is what the album sounds like, the indie scene has another problem on its hands.
Boldy James and the crew. Reform School. Here’s your late pass.
