Maffew Ragazino Sr. has been one of the leaders of the New York New School, dropping bomb after bomb of fresh music representing Brooklyn to the fullest. This latest joint, Favorite J’s, is a departure from his nuevo 90’s flavor with a decidedly Southern bent to the production. This slow growling beat is powered by synthetic 808 lows and humming speaker feedback with well time lonely snares that flesh out minimalist production. Producer Alex Lustig provides an echoed chime and dramatic atmospherics.
The track pays homage to the all time king of kicks, Air Jordans. Sr. adds that Brooklyn swagger to the typical southern flow to this sort of track. He switches from occasional double time flow to half bar trap rap formation. Not the most spectacular shit you’ve ever heard but still dope.
Favorite J’s is dope for the mixtape or for the keep my name buzzing in the streets between albums mode. Bump it.
