There’s a lot of talent coming from the Chi these days and after decades of having individual successes, it feels like a genuine sustainable movement is emanating from those ice cold streets. All that bangs ain’t Drill music however and rapper Jahzel is coming from the north side of Chicago, full-throttle with his latest single Chapters from his upcoming album, In God’s Image, scheduled for July 2.
Absent are the repetitive, infectious choruses and the nihilism that are married to the Drill movement. These aren’t the words of some child who doesn’t imagine a tomorrow, but of someone starkly aware of his place in a bleak, but manageable world. Jahzel is rhyming about the difficulty making it rhyming for a living. Everyone expects you to fail and even when you persevere, you aren’t exactly rolling in dough. Jahzel notes:
Sensitive about my raps I deal with insecurities/ Promise I be yelling but its like nobody’s hearing me/ Always had the drive, Lord I just pray you’re steering me.
I’ll take that over the proliferation of the urban apocalypse any day. Give the homie a listen. Jahzel. Chapters. Enjoy.
