The Gangstarr legacy casts a long shadow over East Coast boombap and one of the branches from that tree is Hannibal Stax (@hannibalstax) , first featured on Itz A Setup from the immaculate Moment of Truth. Hannibal’s aggressive tenor and gruff voice presents a mannish figure on the mic. This time he teams up with producer Marco Polo (@marcopolobeats and Brooklyn’s hard rhymer Torae (@torae)for the aptly titled Warriorz Drum.
Cavernous drums blast the doors off the intro as dramatic strings and a slick bassline complete the league. The bottom opens from beneath the track and cradles the beat wit the help of soft cymbal clashes and airy atmospherics. Hannibal rhymes about dead homies, street grittiness and the consequences of urban violence. Torae ramps the energy up and delivers a lyrical maelstrom that puts the fakers on blast courtesy of a CB4 allegory. Anybody that references The Warriors from Coney Island gets my thumbs up.
Dope beats. Dope rhymes. The package. Wrapped in the gutter that you motherfuckers love. Warriorz Drum. Enjoy.
