90’s heads rejoice. Statik Selektah had the bright idea to bring Raekwon, new schooler Joey Bada$$ and the irrepressible Black Thought on the soul sample-powered Bird’s Eye View. The track is the first salvo from Selektah’s soon to be released Extended Play album and features the basic boom-bap drum with fringe organs, a rousing wail of a soul voice sample and sharp piano work.
Raekwon kicks the verse you know and love with his traditional Shaolin swagger. You close your eyes and he sounds just as sharp as he did on the Purple Tape. Joey Bada$$ sounds totally at home with the veterans holding his own in presence lyricism and confidence. Black Thought closes the song out with his trademark butter soft yet rugged flow. Three the hard way, no chorus and no histrionics.
If Statik Selektah is coming with this kind of heat, then Extended Play is going to make for one hot ass summer sizzler. Bird’s Eye View. Enjoy.
