Back in the day when white rappers were novelty you could laugh them off, but they have been increasingly representing in the mainstream. Iggy Azalea has been making a name for herself and caught a quick Grand Hustle cosign on the way to a deal and a pending major label release. Sounds great right? Here’s the problem: she has a bit of the “it” factor. The Aussie emcee has a bit of an affinity for hood shit, walking that fine line between hood appreciation and hood pimping.
When the mainstream gets their hands on you though, they look for the highest and best usage and if they think she can cross over, gone will be that ill shit and in it’s place will be a whitewashing (ironic, ain’t it?) similar to what happened to Yelawolf on Shady Records. This latest track, “Work,” bangs in some points but you can already see some of her more raw elements filtered out in favor of a more wide screen aesthetic. You hear the synths and the triumph from tragedy hardscrabble story single that frames her autobiography on wax and you just know that by the time that her album drops, all the grit will be gone. Enjoy it while it lasts. “Work.” Hope she doesn’t pull a Minaj mirage on her fans. The visuals of Iggy Azalea Work.
The bottom bumps on this and the atmospherics add some flavor to the song and her flow is tight as always. Homegirl’s body is crazy without looking unhealthy and she’s blonde, so the guys will drool all over this vid. The beat will keep both the skrippas and the ragers happy and it’s at this nexus between genres that Iggy will probably find her niche. It’s out hope here at the Planet that she stays on this side of the line.
