It’s hard out there for new rappers. Apparently all the good name sare taken, all the styles have been invented and all the good stylists work for someone else. Luckily you can stick to the script and follow enough established paradigms that you can secure some success without ahving the reinvent the wheel.
DMV emcee Sock The Rapper (yeah, I know) has a nice track out there with two of his homies Hoffa Bee and G-Two called “Protocol” and it isn’t that bad. Actually, it’s quite good. Once I got over his name, grooved to the slow rolling track. A nice electro bassline adds a hint of the funk and digistal atmospherics make it moern while the electric guitar in the backgroundsupplies the old school analog feel.
Can dude rap? Yeah. nothing spectacular but decidedly so. his voice has a Dr. Dre tenor but younger nad more southern and his boys are solid as well. Hoffa Bee’s flow is complementary, keeping the same feel but riding closer to a higher-pitched Bun B. Not that they sound alike or he’s that good, but he’s definitely been influenced by the big homie. G-Two changes the song with a double timed flow that hugs the beat just the same. The trio keeps the song simple and form a tight, effective crew for the ride.
Have you heard a song like this before? Many times. And you’ll hear it again but Sock the Rapper and crewhave ridden the bull and delivered a solid track to roll with, smoke with, or just chill with. They did mroe than enough to warrant a listen to another track. We’ll let you know how it goes. Until then, Enjoy Protocol.
