As Nicki Minaj moves further into Poplandia, the streets are missing that hard-rhyming hood bitch with the “It” factor. There are plenty of female rappers. We cover them even if they won’t, but not many have that spark of stardom that is self-evident. Azealia Banks is that bitch right now, from wilding out on Twitter to surprisingly ripping down stages in 2012, Banks has shown not only the passion and the skill, but the X Factor that makes one a star. 2013 supposedly brings a studio album from the Harlem-bred rapper and the first joint from it is “BBD.”
What’s ill about Banks is how she infuses that now energy with enough familiarity that old cats can fuck with it. She switches her cadence up subtly to match whatever message she’s trying ot send. She can carry a tune and while she’s not as sharp with the comebacks as Rihanna, she doesn’t have to outshout you to son you.
As for “BBD”[Bad Bitches Do It] the track features elements of Dubbstep and all the electronic elements that are popping right now, mixed with a snare drum and that low bottom trap drum. A murky bassline also runs throughout the composition. She delivers a smoky, Lil Kim–like tenor with a flow that is aggressive but melts all over this track like warm butter. There is no predictable a/b rhyme scheme and she hops all over the beat when it changes.
Azealia Banks is one of a new breed of artists that aren’t married to a particular genre. She has all the tools to be a star and “BBD” is just another example of how credible she is as an artists. Hopefully 2013 will fulfill that promise. For now, this bad bitch is doing it. BBD, without Bivens, Ronny Romance and Ricky Bell.
