It’s interesting when you go back in time and look at how much things have changed, especially in Hip-Hop. Back in 1994, almost 20 years ago, Jay-Z was a hype man and doing the college radio circuit. At that time, the late, Lamont Coleman was also making those rounds, and was probably a bigger star at that point considering he had an album out by then and a strong video/single with “MVP.” Their freestyle session on Stretch and Bobbito has become a thing of legend and no matter who you think came out on top, whenever you hear it, you can’t help but think can it be that it was all so simple then.
Jersey Rapper Jay Encore must feel the same way, because he decided to bring back that loving feeling with a freestyle over the same beat entitled 95 Time Machine Flow. When you have your era, you will defend it so it wouldn’t be fair to sit here and ponder whether the young kid sounds better than two guys that went on to become heavy hitters, but it doesn’t sound like shit and that’s important if you’re going to revisit the scene of a great time. Give the kid a listen or two and see if he passes muster to you. There are some slick moments. Black and white vid is a nice touch. You be the judge. Jay Encore (please…no more Jays after this Faire, Electronica, Live, Love etc). “95 Time Machine Flow.” Enjoy.
