George Orwell’s 1984 inspired countless expositions in to techno-dystopic futures featuring domination by secret powers that control humanity with button pushes and bend the masses to their whim…unbeknownst to the masses themselves. One of Planet Ill’s FAVORITE emcees, the Homeboy Sandman has taken hold of that idea for his stunning track, “Illuminati,” from his extremely dope album, First Of A Living Breed.
The track systematically breaks down society with razor sharp precision, examining everything from the drugs in urban communities to the power of religion and how far away from the actual idea of God it has become. While that’s enough in itself to get you going, Homeboy Sandman employs various devices including homonyms, internal rhyme scheme, various inflections and more to slice and dice his sharp ideas into brilliant rhyme shredded wheat. While he doesn’t actually speak directly about the Illuminati, he addresses all of the issues that people attirbute to the Illuminati in a manner that feels more like investigative reporting than conspiracy rambling.
The minimalist track comes courtesy of the Brown Bag All-Stars resident beat smith J57. Its haunting minimalism is crafted like the best of those conspiracy theory soundtracks to shows like Unsolved Mysteries. Spooky realism without histrionics. Well done.
You won’t hear a better Hip-Hop song this year. More about that in a few days. But Homeboy Sandman spellbinds with “Illuminati.” And now there are visuals. We don’t know what the Illuminati look like. But they sound real devious. Enjoy.
