EDM has really come into its own in 2012, and while last year featured many R&B singers trying to fake the funk, this year featured more rappers attempting to incorporate those high BPMs and grooves into their music. The sound lends itself well to partying, song placement and general good time.
Former Ohio State cornerback, former white shoe attorney and present emcee Mekka Don has always had his eye on what’s next and his latest project, a 5 song EP Paradise is an attempt to splice the DNA of Hip-Hop with the energy of EDM. The project is an all Ohio affair, produced by a team called Tha Audio Unit as well as DJ EV, both from the Buckeye State. There are also elements of trance and rock mixed in for good measure.
The project differs from Mekka’s previous output not only sonically, but thematically as he shares more of his journey from athlete to attorney to rapper. The short but sweet collection ventures into the EDM waters but doesn’t quite immerse him in that world totally. He hasn’t yet found the way to totally buy into the EDM rhythm in terms of altering flows, so for this run that true synergy isn’t there quite yet, but the beats have bounce and he keeps his bars easily digestible so they don’t get lost in the rhythm.
The common theme of Paradise is perseverance and adapting to the changes that life throws in your direction. It’s not always easy and some of the choices you make will not find favor with everyone, but in all things remain true to yourself and push for whatever you feel would be your personal paradise. Be prepared to pay the price for your dreams. Mekka Don does this through the sharing of his own journey, something that will always help a newer artist connect. Below is the project in its entirety.
