One of the common themes of Hip-Hop in 2012 is the marshaling of forces of old groups into new collaborations to stay afloat in the current marketplace (Wu Block, Fizzyology, La Coka Nostra, etc.) Many times it’s a nice change of pace to hear these emcees out of the context in which we’re so used to hearing them and my time sit allows them to showcase different talents that don’t necessarily align with the brands of their original groups.
The latest of these merry mix-ups is Czarface, which combines the royalty of a Czar with the ruthlessness of everyone’s favorite cokehead with a warped sense of honor, Tony Montana. The group reunites Inspector Deck and his Wu Tang legacy with Bean Town underground legends 7L & Esoteric, who first got together over a decade ago for the track “Speaking Real Words.” This time they’ve gone the whole 9 and made it an official group with the project.
The traditional 90s era hubris is here in full effect as Deck notes:
We are CZARFACE because they know our faces and they know us for being dope rhyme suppliers, like Tony Montana we are known for our balls and our word; lyrically we will conquer the world and everything in it
Esoteric clarifies the crew mission, which takes aim at the well-packaged acts that spring up in the music that are more package than progress. In the context of the project, he explains:
CZARFACE is a vigilante, anti-hero character who serves as the face of the project, and his focus is on annihilating the media darlings that the mainstream caters to.
Don’t know how successful our treacherous three will be with this mission but here is the first shot in their war on plastic rap, “Cement 3’s” featuring Roc Marciano and referencing one on the greatest sneakers of all-time, the Air Jordan Cement 3’s. No retro suckers card, came with this. If you’re an OG, you have Nike on the back and not the Jumpman logo, but they’re still one of the dopest ever. Maybe the track is as well. Cement 3’s. Peace
