“Real journalism is publishing something someone else does not want published – the rest is just public relations.” George Orwell
With so much drama in the world today in our communities on both macro and micro levels, it’s always strange to see the news or people who claim to be journalists talking about all kinds of silly things and never what’s going on. The Firing Squad is here to take aim at all that is wrong with the world, starting with our own communities. Three men of color with no censor and no objectives but truth, justice and common sense. Each episode will deal with hot-button issues with honesty, straight talk, and humor whenever possible . No personality is untouchable, and no one is spared the venom, or the praise whenever fit.
For this Thanksgiving special, we opened with a tough talking customer at Best Buy who came in with loud talk and left with a couple of jigged up ribs. As we get on with the show, we looked at recent events and came up with a doozy of an episode.
2 Chainz was recently designated as Man of the Year by the Source Magazine. What exactly does that mean? How do you get that award with a weak album? Does anyone in Hip-Hop deserve man of the year with the low ceilings and aspirations of present-day rap music? Does it reflect on the Source Magazine that with all the happenings of 2012, does a rapper even deserve mention?
We interrupted the show to laugh hysterically at the Patriots pounding out the NY Jets.
We look at the Thanksgiving holiday and how strong a holiday it is with community and place that against the horrible legacy of the holiday and the destruction of the Native people. We also connect it to the mentality present in people today. Could we disconnect the holiday and give thanks to something else other than the Pilgrim legacy? Is it possible to enjoy AND reconcile that with the genocide it is attached to? If you mention that legacy, are you a party pooper or hypocrite?
Who has the worse afro, ?uestlove from the Roots or Dr. Cornel West? What is the purpose of either? Why won’t they get a line? Why won’t they get a shape-up? Is it a stand against style? What’s the worse accessory, the ?uest afro pic or Dr. West’s ridiculous neck scarves? Why does he wear it everywhere? Even indoors. Can we take anything you say seriously when you see that scarf?
We look at some of the best NBA fights in history. From Charles Oakley slapping Barkley over lockout negotiations, Shaq slapping Ostertag, Air Jordan punching Steve Kerr during practice. We hit you with a few surprises like a Chris Childs’ two-piece.
We look at the one thing besides turkey that is indispensable during a Thanksgiving meal and take our white friends to task for thinking that pumpkin pie can compete with sweet potato pie. We also take to task people who put extra crunchy things in potato salad and people who Instagram their ugly thanksgiving dinners.
