If you’re honest with yourself, you haven’t heard DJ Premier on fire since maybe “I’m Gone,” from Fat Joe’s first Darkside album. He’s firing on all cylinders on this beautifully dirty track from Fizzyology (Termanology and Lil Fame). Their eponymous album is coming in November and “Play Dirty,” features Styles P and goat closer Busta Rhymes.
Mean Joe Preme’s signature sound is in ful effect with a sinister muddy loop that harkens back to his 90s heyday. What separates this composition from the tidal wave of new era premealikes is the string driven undercurrent whose movement adds dynamism to the track. It moves every few bars and throws you off balance while forcing you to listen and catch the timing pattern. A DMX sample is scratched in for good measure. Vintage work.
Termanlogy kicks an agile but done before flow. He handles the opening verse well and provides the perfect entre to Lil Fame’s hardcore delivery. Fame’s verse is full of equal parts malice, humor, wit and self deprecation. Styles P drops the line of the song with “I look forward to my nines like an 8th grader.” Busta closes with his trademark frenetic energy and recently enamored with tough talk.
The awesome foursome delivered on this one and struck a blow for those “trapped in the 90s n****s.” Sometimes on that mic, you gotta “Play Dirty.” These dudes know. Peace
