In the era of Diggy and other kiddie rap acts we forget that teenagers have been rapping for a minutes. LL was a baby and a lot of our Golden Era rappers were in their late teens when they first wrecked mics. But as a kid, the first rapper I remembered that rapped as a kid kid was Chi Ali. Duke went to high school with a chick I went to grammar school with and there was also a bit of that Catholic high school innuendo goign on as well, but hey it was the 90s. A few years later and Chi Ali is a bit too grown and the girlfriend games got deadly. Chi Ali ended up on the run like Kool G. Rap for a double murder. That’s a bit too real for your ass.
Skyzoo remembers Chi and his joint, complete with Uncle Ralph McDaniels intro to Chi’s old video. The track, “Jansport Strings” is produced by underground wunderkind 9th Wonder is beats and rhymes, a formula that really and truly works for Skyzoo. He took it back to that 90’s era a bit as a nod to the still imprisoned Chi Ali and acknowledges the feel good nature of Chi Ali’s rap persona. It’s not all about Ali but more about the era. Not to the level of Skyzoo’s recent hard-hitting tracks, but this serves as the lead from his coming album A Dream Deferred, the highly anticipated (at least by the heads) to his brilliant debut, The Salvation.
Sit back, sip some lemonade and take a trip to a simpler time. Dopeness.
