Robin Thicke has an incredible knack for making sexy, feel-good adult music that is groove heavy and well-written. If R.Kelly connects with your inner negro, then Robin bolsters your inner adult. His music is always steeped in a genuine sentiment that can only come from a guy in love. His latest single, “Another Life,” is more of the same.
“I know that you and I are supposed to be,” he croons “because there is something familiar with this feel.” The connection between he and his paramour is otherworldly and couldn’t possibly have derived from this place and time. It feels so natural that they HAD to have connected previously, perhaps in another life.
The track is certified with analog and digital elements, including a very organic and lively piano, a smooth bassline and groovy atmospherics bookended by very faint synths and horns. This is not EDM but it’s not your dad’s R&B. Vocally, he doesn’t linger in that falsetto delivery that he had become enamored of recently. He carries a mid-range execution that would probably translate well live and allow for a couple of slick two-step moves. Some of his vocal runs re takigng on a smokey, Michel McDonald quality on the lower end of his range and that’s not a bad place to be. He does all the background vocals and the ad libs and they all add to the larger tapestry.
Robin Thicke is steadily adding to his mystique and legend by crafting feel good music that you don’t’ have to hide from your children. There is a sly sexiness to it and it’s not important by any means but he’s showing the marketplace that making seductive, danceable music is nowhere near mission impossible. I salute this one. “Another Life.” Feel your partners ass to this…once the kids are put to bed of course.
