When the Roc crumbled it sapped a bunch of momentum from Philly Hip-Hop. Young Chris hooked up with Rico Love and has been trying to get his movement going, but it hasn’t gotten further than a few solid mixtapes. Beans can’t seem to stay out of jail. Freeway had a nice banger with Jake One but it didn’t make any real waves. Hey, at least the Roots didn’t become undone.
But what about the New Jacks? joey Jihad is still picking up the pieces from that YouTube knockout. Meek Mill is riding high on that Maybach but his sound is getting a bit too flossy for the gritty Philly streets. Four man team Muzic Class, featuring two rappers and two producers is getting some buzz right now. Their sound is muddy and assertive but not angry and overblown.
The Class has solid lyrics and a production style that draws you in with moody drama and a serious tone. Their latest video, “Clouds” is representative of their sound. I can’t front i saw the black and white and the concrete and I thought , “Oh boy, more urban apocalypse.” But this is a solid song from some kids that appear to take this music seriously and have something to say. Respect the bars. Respect the beat. Muzic Class is in session. “Clouds.” Get hip.
