I can’t lie to you. It’s been a while since I heard something from Jay-Z that got me excited. I’ve been over Dr. Dre for a minute and I’m very scared that Rick Ross will under deliver on that God Forgives, I Don’t record. With that in mind, and Twitter going bonkers over it, I have to get a taste of this “3 Kings.”
First thing’s first, this Jake One production is crisp like a vanilla wafer. The interplay between the bassline the angelic soulful singing on the chorus and how he takes the beat underwater on the breaks is exquisite. Certainly a step up from even his normal flavor. This beat is more composed than produced and that’s a testament to how well it’s put together.
Dre’s verse is pointless and even though he’s always had one of the best voices ever, I’m so disgusted with the broken promises of Detox that I honestly don’t want to hear shit from him until that album comes out (never).
Rick Ross is one of the best rappers at coming in on the middle of a song. Everyone remembers the closer but you still have to get through middle relief and with a boring verse like the one Dre drops, Rozay keeps the energy and your attention long enough for you to get to the 9th inning. Nothing fantastic here, just a gritty, Andy Pettite like performance; more control and precision than high heat.
I’m a scorned Jay-Z fan. I admit it. I pulled for that motherfucker more times than you can count and I’ve been so disappointed in so many of his recent performances that I caught myself lowering expectations. I gotta hand it to old man Hov, there is still some fire in him when he’s motivated. And he’s motivated on this. I had to clear myself turn the lights off and slide on the monitor headphones and get back in the mood and when I did, I keyed on his strongest performance in about a year at least.
The verse has that trademark Jay from the clouds with the slick talk, shouts to his daughter, Basquiats on the walls, and a bit of sound effect Jay we haven’t heard since “boomp pu click, slow down baby” (“Who You With.”) And then that real mark of being locked in- when you rhyming after the beat stops. Reminds me of how much I miss the old Jigga. I already got the old albums. Bump this. Skip Dre. “3 Kings.”
