Awww Funk Me: Hip Hop’s Best Parliament-Funkadelic Samples (Minus Dr. Dre) Part 1

By shelz.

The video dropped for Murs’ “Animal Style” a few weeks ago reminding everyone of his seriously underhyped and underpurchsed album, Love & Rockets. It also should remind you of what a great producer Ski Beatz is and how awesome Eddie Hazel once was. That’s his sampled lick from Funkadelic’s monumental “Maggot Brain,” a ten minute guitar solo that stirs and emotes more than your favorite current axe masters entire repertoire. I’ve talked about this song before. I’m sure ill speak of it again. It doesn’t get any better than this.

I’m not going to dismiss the rest of what Parliament-Funkadelic did however. Funkadelic’s self titled LP is in my top ten of all time and classics like One Nation Under a Groove and Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow will always get peeps out their seats. There are also a lot of groups that pulled a career’s worth of inspiration from the crew and we all know the left coast’s rise to prominence in the early 90’s wouldn’t have occurred without George Clinton. Eric Sermon should throw some thanks his way as well. The bottom line is if you don’t have Funkadelic or Parliament in your collection, you’re missing an important chunk of music history.

To get you started on your exploration of the wildest funk band on earth, here are a few of your favorite producers and their pilfering of George Clinton’s genius. Planet Ill presents the top 10 non Dr. Dre Hip Hop nation P-Funk samples. There’s a gang of them , so 10 is just the tip of the iceberg. I could make this list 100 songs long and still have nothing but classic material with plenty left over.  Before we get started though, here is Eddie Hazel in all of his glory.  May he rest in peace.

Jungle Brothers – “Jimbrowski”

Don’t laugh. This was state of the art production back then. But seriously if Jimbrowski really was 7 feet tall, what would you do? What would you say? How would you feel? Anyway, while you ponder, know that this track is pretty much just the intro to “Good Ole Music” sped up and looped.

“Good Ole Music”

Nas – “One Love”

Of course you would find a P-Funk sample one of the best rap albums of all time.  Its P-Funk. Check the thump.  You will find the sample there.

“Come In Out Of The Rain”

Killer Mike – “Burn”

The best song on what may very well be Killer Mike’s best album. Is the Funkadelic sample just a coincidence? I think not. But just in the off chance that you cant find the sample, its umm.. the whole song pretty much.

“Me And My Folks And You And Your Folks”

Public Enemy – “Bring the Noise”

I know this song is drowning in samples, but you know that squeal of a guitar. The one that ratchets the anxiety level of this song up to a million. Yes, it belongs to Funkadelic. I’m sure the Bomb Squad has already thanked George Clinton and you should too.

“Get Off Your Ass and Jam”

Eric B And Rakim – “I Know You Got Soul”

I’m sure you are seeing a pattern here.  Dre, while doing some awesome things with P-Funk, did not have the early 90’s funk market cornered.  Its a New York funk party.  Well, except for Mike.  Anyway, this style is identical to one.  George Clinton’s.  He has soul too you know.  The front end is all Funkadelic.

“You’ll Like It Too”

Stay tuned for part 2.
