yU is a serious lyricist with keen powers of observation and a strong, stoic way of bringing reality to your ass. He dropped another solid release in 2011 with The Earn, the follow-up to his debut Before Taxes . One of the stronger songs from that work was the soulful “I Believe.” Fellow Mello Music artist Oddisee decided to put a lil hood to it and the result is the remix.
Hardknocking drums pace a minimalist construction with slow developing atmospherics. Sparse horns expand and contract in sharp bursts while tiny bleeps and bloops add character. The bassline rolls in and drops on breaks for a change of pace. Overall there’s nothing fancy here but well-built tight production
yU speaks of the streets, his life and divinity, believing in what he can’t see or touch. Life is a test and we do what we have to do to survive the hell on Earth. His voice is gravely rough, conveying that authentic street grit.
You don’t get to hear real remixes anymore thanks to the BDS system but we’re dealing with indie artists here so fuck the radio. This version of MMG (Mello Music Group) is for the corner, not the streets. When you get caught out on their streets there are real consequences and crack doesn’t come with the glamorous life. Get some grit. “I Believe.” Enjoy.
