For a culture that is bent on being fresh and new, there are many instances where Hip-Hop remains uninventive and closed to alternative lines of thought. Once something catches fire, copycat nation replicates so that entire eras are comprised of similar sounding artists. Then along came I Am Many.
We interviewed I Am Many a few months ago, introduced to him by our homie the Homeboy Sandman in our interview at the Museum of Modern Art. He was an interesting subject to say the least. I found him at all times inventive, fresh and different and his latest video, “More Black.” The video explores many aspects of the fetish scene, depicting BDSM, domination, chain/collared women and much more. While most would consider these images risqué or even disturbing, they go along with I Am Many’s narrative; he going deep into the NY fetish scene with sharp lyricism and an off-kilter aggressive delivery that is occasionally jarring but not offensive to the ears. The images only serve to push the point home.
We’ve seen enough videos with the Times Square backdrop, or the Riverbed in LA or candy paint and strip clubs. I Am Many sets out to take you deep into the abyss. How tolerant are you? How low are you willing to go? Test your limits. See if you can get “More Black.”
