I used to work with this odd and emotionally damaged chick who needed help with her self esteem regularly. She put on a brave front and she had a lot to work with so it was easy for her to appear comfortable. But in her office, behind her desk, she had hundreds of affirmative messages written on post it notes that were covering every surface available. When I hear Donald Glover rap, I hear this woman’s post its.
There is something compelling about Glover, and its routed in his self doubt. He says the right things about being great and a star and what not, but conflict lies below the surface. He’s not the self effacing mess that Charles Hamilton is and hes just as far from the self absorption of Tyler The Creator or Troy Ave. That’s what makes this dude special, his layers, even if I don’t find him to be the best rapper in the world. And even if he reminds me of that crazy bish I used to work with.
Anyway, this is Childish Gambino’s latest, a joint that considers value in not warming up to the status quo. “We Aint Them,” can be picked up here and it comes with a forward from Big Ghostface. I guess that shtick will never die. It also comes with this interesting cover art. Enjoy.
