In the jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight. The Lion King made that song famous and Killa Cam uses the loop for familiarity on his latest joint “The Jungle,” co-starring T.I. The track features staccato snare drums in a minimalist pairing with a faux 808. The “jungle” vocal sample runs throughout the composition in different sections.
Cam talks that Lenox Ave shit, talking about the place where he’s from with a tragic affinity. Wild shit forms the basis of his upbringing and there is a pride in surviving and thriving while coming from a place that has taken so many people down.
Where Cam’s verse is full of swagger and that patented Harlem oomph, T.I.’s verse is razor sharp and precise in execution. His diction is crisp and he alternates a pseudo Northern delivery with his Southern drawl. He still talking that gun toting shit, but he too looks back at humble upbringings and the success he’s achieved and beams with pride. He wields his words with more skill than Killa, even shouting out the Lion King at the end of his verse.
This is a nice pairing of both sides of the Mason/Dixon line. The swagger of Cam blends well with T.I.’s skill and in the jungle these two are strong enough to survive. The beat is a novelty and after a few listens you will file it away but it’s strong rap from this daring pairing. “The Jungle.” Enjoy.
