Last year, Big K.R.I.T. dropped one of the best mixtapes in recent memory with Return 2 4Eva. The record was not only a precursor of more hard work to come, but it was a line in the sand drawn with defiance. Big K.R.I.T/ was taking his stand for the South. The heavy drawl was a consistent component of his delivery, but sharp rhymes and a legitimate musicality and songwriting ability was also past and parcel with his package.
We stand a year later on the verge of his DefJam release and he’s slowly hitting us with more of that same strong undeniably Southern music. This does comes courtesy of the new song, “Yeah That’s Me.” Whether you’re riding around and getting it or you’re in the strip club, this shit KNOCKS!
K.R.I.T. is not trying to embrace that “you’re different from the others” motif. He truncates the end of his words with the classic Southern flavor that T.I. took to a new level. He’s waking up fresh, he’s getting that money, he’s driving the candy painted whip and he’s repping his hood. The same shit that trap rappers talk but with gusto and an overt skill level that most this side of Ross can’t match.
There is always a thought that you can’t have fun as an emcee and have a soul, but K.R.I.T. is living proof that even when you rap for the trap, you can have depth and substance. This one is strictly for the riders and the players. Rock your ice. Blast your music. Make your ass clap in the clubs and get that money. Krit won’t leave you out in the cold. “Yeah Dat’s Me.” Enjoy.
