Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have finally converged on one screen. In 2008 Marvel Studios set out to do the impossible: set up. A shared movie universe for some of the most popular comic book titles culminating with an all-star vehicle, The Avengers.
We began with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. 2010 brought Iron Man 2. In 2011 we got Thor and Captain America, each movie connected by cameos by Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D, and the Avengers Initiative.
The fervor for people to stay in theaters to see what would happen after the credits was mind blowing. Joss Whedon, director extraordinaire, has done the impossible: place all of these characters in an ensemble cast and not court disaster. DC take notes. All of these characters add up to one thing: SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER!!!!
As in the comics, the heroes are brought together to face the villainous Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston with even more nuance than his Thor debut). Loki is no cackling super villain, but a flawed and layered character whose machinations are far more human and resonant than simple world domination. The Avengers must not only overcome Loki and his alien forces, but also their own personal struggles.
Hawkeye and the Black Widow find themselves in over their pay grades in a battle of gods and superhumans. Captain America battles with himself as a man out of his era. Thor battles against coming to grips with the fact that his best friend and brother has now become his greatest foe. Tony Stark, again reprised by Robert Downey Jr. battles his own arrogance and the authority of others. At no time does any of these struggles overpower the movement of the film. Also similar to Marvel comics, the heroes generally misunderstand and come to blows before they band together. I have three words for you: Hulk Vs. Thor!
The story is fluid and an adrenaline rush from beginning to end. You don’t even have to like comics to get into this movie. It is action packed, with a number scenes that will have the crowd exploding with laughter and applause. The effects are only an added bonus, Whedon added banter between characters makes the whole package entertaining. Trust me this franchise is not done. Everyone has signed on for multipicture deals. This is a must see if you want to start your summer movie season right. Oh, and do yourself a favor watch the credits.
