In the movie 48 Hours, Eddie Murphy forever changed the dynamic of buddy cop movies, leading the way for a host of multiracial flicks; some better than others. Probably the best of his offspring was the Lethal Weapon series featuring Mel Gibson and Danny Glovers as officers Riggs and Murtaugh. The spirit of Lethal Weapon was a mix of family, masculine energy, comedy and a shitload of property damage. REKS and Action Bronson aim to similarly crush things with their collabo “Riggs & Murtaugh,” from REKS’ latest release Straight, No Chaser produced by Statik Selektah.

The song is a throwback to the time when hooks were light and rhymes were heavy. There are no two lin setups on this and no abundance of like or as or punch lines, only a constant string of lyrics and hard-hitting rhymes over a Statik Selektah selection.

The beat is comprised of a hard-knocking drum and a sharp snare, paced by deft piano work that isn’t too slick for its own good or showstealing. Statik is still sharpening his skills as a composer and there isn’t a thing out of place on this beat.

Occasionally it’s difficult not to see Action Bronson as anything but Ghostface light with his vocal similarity but his bars are consistently hsarp and his delivery is precise. He and REKS go back and forth seamlessly with  a chemistry that would make Erick and Parish take serious heed to their business. The duo weave in and out of each other’s stanzas; never pausing for breath or breaking out into eight bars of pointless chorus. Efficiency is the name of the game here

Knock this in your headphones or your speakers. It’s not as explosive as Lethal Weapon but “Riggs and Murtaugh” is worthy of top billing. Word to Giz. Enjoy.
