There are no illusions here. Football is a brutal business. The meaner, the harder, the tougher the play, the better. But there is something really disturbing about this taped speech Gregg Williams gave the night before the playoff game against the 49ers last season. The fact that he knew he was being recorded and gave not one rat’s ass about it speaks to his feelings of invincibility. The Saints had already been investigated for bounties. The GM had already told them to cease and desist, but this dude is talking about checking for people’s ACL’s with a camera crew in tow. Elliott Ness you are not sir. This is probably one of the reasons he was touched.
Anyway, this audio is courtesy of Sean Pamphilon, a filmmaker who was actually in the middle of making a documentary about Steve Gleason, an ex-Saint suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease. For those of you who don’t know, the links between ALS or Lou Gehrig’s and multiple concussions are being studied and I’m sure we all know the NFL has a bit of a concussion problem on its hands these days. There is some irony in there somewhere.
So without further adieu, here you go. Right in time for appeals day. The timing of this is absolutely impeccable. Need to know more? Click here.
