Planet Ill: So now Tupac, Vegas. We all see the video. We all see Orlando get stomped out. After the fight, Tupac gets murdered. There are rumors that it wasn’t so cut and dry. That people in Knight’s entourage actually shot back at the car and that they saw who was in the car; that Suge saw that it was Orlando Anderson doing the shooting. Compound question: Who was in the car, how did we find out who was in the car and how did everything else get left out so cleanly?
Greg Kading: Okay I’ll try to answer all of those. First of all, it was more than just the beating. The beating kind of exacerbated a situation that already existed. It poured fuel on a fire that was already kindling. So Orlando Anderson gets stomped…
Planet Ill: Now before that, there was a bounty on Death Row chains, and Orlando got somebody for one, is that correct?
Greg Kading: That’s absolutely correct! They were at the Lakewood Mall, several months before, Travon Lane, Kevin Woods and some of these MOB Piru guys they’re at the mall they run into Orlando Anderson and some of the other Southside Crips they get into a big fight outside of the Footlocker and a chain gets snatched. There’s already a rumor that there was a bounty for that chain.
Planet Ill: Now was that bounty related to the bounty on Suge or is that independent and the street just wants Death Row chains?
Greg Kading: Well the rumor was, and this has never been substantiated that it was either Puffy or maybe Biggie that was asking for one of the Death Row chains. That was the rumor, we don’t know anything about how factual that is, but certainly there was a confrontation where a chain was stolen.
So then we’re in Las Vegas. Travon Lane, one of the individuals in the Footlocker at the altercation and it may have actually been his necklace; If it wasn’t Kevin Woods’ then it was Travon Lane’s. They’re at the MGM, Travon Lane looks over, he sees Orlando Anderson, “There’s the motherfucker that snatched our chain.” Tupac takes off and it was just that. He recognized the guy and Tupac incited the fight and the next thing you know, Orlando Anderson hooks up with his uncle Keefe D, they go hook up with Zip, Zip provides the guns to Keefe and they go on the hunt.
They go to the 662 club trying to find these guys, they lie in wait there, some of the Blood guys in the parking lot see the Crips, they make the Crips uncomfortable so they leave, they go around the corner to a liquor store, Keefe D gets into the white Cadillac that’s being driven by another Southside Crip named Terrance Brown. In the back seat of the Cadillac is Orlando Anderson and a guy named Deandre Smith and the four of them are going down the road when they hear all this hooting and hollering, “Tupac, Tupac!” Next thing you know they spin a u-turn, they pull up beside the BMW, Keefe D hands the gun to the back seat, and Orlando Anderson grabs it, leans out the window and starts blasting in the Beemer.
Planet Ill: He [Tupac] got shot trying to run to the back right? I mean there’s a lot of mentions that Suge used him as a shield or Suge shot him, but logistically, that doesn’t make sense does it?
Greg Kading: Well here’s the thing, Suge knight says tat he was trying to pull Tupac down out of harm’s way. If you look at the trajectory of the bullets and the way in which they hit Tupac, he was obviously squirming around in his seat which obviously anybody is going to do if you’re in a car and someone’s blasting at you. You’re just trying to get out the way. I’ll get in the ashtray if I have to. I’m trying to get out the way. And that’s all Tupac was doing, trying to protect himself by moving out the way but there’s no way to go.
