When I heard Stalley was joining Ross’ stable, I considered how much each side would have to compromise artistically. It’s not like Stalley ever impressed as an MMG kind of cat. Well, with the release of the first single from Stalley’s upcoming MMG release, Savage Journey to the American Dream, we are offered a taste of that combo. “Everything New” might be new to Stalley, but I think the rest of us have heard this before.
Chad Hugo’s track is deceptively simple. The anxious piano leads the track with almost frantic spirit while the layered drums attempt to keep up. A synthetic woodwind floats in and out of the frenzy adding balance to all the murky lows. It’s not the vivid wall of sound Ross normally prefers and its definitely not the snare and synth fest we get with Meek. It’s retro Neptunes and very different than what we normal get from Ross’ crew.
Stalley’s flow is odd to me though. He’s at a higher pitch than I remember. There’s anxiety in his delivery, a product of the track’s pace maybe. His intonation on the vowels sounds Jay-z-esque. He’s rapping about expensive cars, floor length furs and his watch? Okay. Not only is someone watching the throne, they are borrowing from it.
I’m not complaining. What it lacks in originality, it makes up for in dopeness even if it does sound like someone else. “Everything New.” Enjoy.
