Mixtape Review: Big K.R.I.T. – 4evaNaDay

By Ahmad Awadallah

Big K.R.I.T. is one of few rappers  dispelling the stereotype that the Dirty South is all about candy cars, chicks, and club music. Well he still spits about cars and broads, but he adds his own distinct flavor. The kid exudes soul and it is evident off his last five mixtapes, which includes his newest effort, 4evaNaDay. K.R.I.T. does not only possess stern lyricism, but he is quite the beatsmith as well. The production sizzles on this joint and the man from Mississippi is responsible for a cohesive 17-tracks. Writing a hit song has been an Achilles’ heel for lyrically gifted emcees since the days of Kool G Rap, but the Southern spitter definitely has the versatility to bypass the infamous rhymesters’ curse. The somber sounds of saxophones serenade “Wake Up” and K.R.I.T. spits a positive message throughout. His signature quick-paced fragmented flow really takes the record to another level. On “Yesterday” he samples 2Pac’s “Bury Me A G” melody but still manages make it his own. A touching record to say the least, he reminisces over his grandma, and despite the constant praying, he still misses her. “4EvaNaDay” has crossover appeal and definitely demonstrates his songwriting skills. The track is uptempo and the hook goes hard, but he still manages to spew some real bars on serious subject matters.

Country folks shouldn’t be too worried about K.R.I.T selling out anytime soon and “Country Rap Tunes” cements his thoroughness for his premier supporters. BK‘s intricate lyricism rips the beat apart. Grip the wood grain steering wheel and G-Ride to the suave sounds of “Down & Out” and then peep the realness of “Package Store.” At this point, you wonder, could this guy do any wrong? Forget placing him as one of the best Southern producers, but you might place him as one of the best in the game. The suspenseful tension and melodramatic opera crooning on “Alarm” nicely closes the solid mixtape. You can feel his anger and pain as his raps about his relationship with God, losing friends and price of fame, but would have been hotter if he went longer than two-minutes.

Hey Sha Money, the kid is dope. How many classic mixtapes does this guy have to deliver before he drops his debut album? If K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, Return of 4Eva and Last King 2: God’s Machine weren’t enough proof that BK is the truth, then his newest tape will surely make you a believer. Stay tuned for Live From The Underground.
