As a teenager in New York during the late 80’s and early 90’s it was hard not to hear the whispers of the Decepticons. New York didn’t have any real gangs back then, Hip-Hop put an end to the real gang era years before. But there were always crews, usually based on territory that held down the streets. But one group didn’t just attack the block. They were mythical beasts roaming the concrete jungle in search of the shook one. Park West High School, the A train. If you wanted it you could get it if they smelled the fear.
It didn’t really get far uptown to Harlem and the Bronx so mostly what we went off was the legends and the ghost stories. I remember one after school day riding the A train and the car in front of mine got swarmed by a mob of dudes with the infamous Timberland 40 Belows (the joints Bishop wore in Juice for all you youngsters.) Chains was flying, chicks were screaming and your boy got juuuuust a lil concerned that his subway car was next. Thankfully it it wasn’t. The knuckle game don’t mean anything to a mob, and you don’t have to be soft to get outgunned.
Maffew Ragazino knows about those days. Here’s a little something from the kid, a bonus that didn’t appear on his recently released and very dope album, Rhyme Pays. The track takes you back to those days with a whiff of nostalgia for the days before Macbooks and Starbucks took over Fort Green, when Delancy Street was a breeding ground for the season of the vic. Hear the noisy ass subway rattling, drowning out the “yeaaaaaaahs” of the bumrush. Smell the homeless people. And most important, beware of the “Decepts On The L Train.” Respect the jux.
