Lost in all the Dr. Dre canonization is the very real fact that Ice – T is the true Godfather of the West Coast gangster rap. Ice told bone-chilling tales that didn’t glamorize the fast life or feature an outsider’s romanticism, but delivered a sharp morality where the consequences of fast living were always apparent.
Ice-t’s work informed many rappers, work but when it’s time to count, he’s always conspicuously left out. No longer. Fresh out the county, Killer Reese One from King Fantastic decided to cover one of the illest songs from Ice’s classic Rhyme Pays album, “Squeeze The Trigger” with a video to go along with it.
The song speaks to urban demonization anbd the casting of the innercity as America’s nightmare while the atrocities committed by global wars, rogue police, and foul laws outweigh any evil the hood portrays exponentially. That kind of keen observation, absent of tit-for-tat blame gamism is what Ice excelled at and this cover and its accompanying video capture that same spirit in effective homage wjile framing the song for the 21st century. Well done gangster. Peace
